The Council makes us an offer…

On May 7 2014, at our Public Meeting, Councillor Roxanne Mashari made us this promise:

So Preston Community Library; I believe there is an opportunity over the next twelve months, and by January 2015 we will know whether the previous library building will be needed for school places as we know there is a massive school place shortage across the borough, but this is unlikely as there has already been a local school expansion in the area.

Therefore this Labour administration the Labour party in Brent will offer the building at a peppercorn rent to any local community group who can provide a sustainable community Library and that is our pledge.

We will not open to competitive tender in order to give preference to local groups if they can demonstrate health and safety sustainability etc. and we will offer help and assistance through Brent CVS the voluntary sector and continued support and networking through the Brent libraries forum which has proved successful for the likes of the Friends of Kensal Rise.

Public Meeting announcement 2014

The Friends of Preston Library will be holding a pre-election Public Meeting on Wednesday 7th May at 7:30 pm in St Erconwald’s RC Church, Carlton Avenue East, Wembley. We will be updating the community about the ongoing campaign to restore our local library. All local Councillors have been invited.

Preston Library can reopen in 2015

How many of us who regularly used Preston Library or walked past it, knowing that we could drop in to borrow a book or DVD, read a paper, use a computer, study or read undisturbed, or enjoy all the cultural, social and essential activities that were hosted in the facility?

The loss of the library left a gaping hole in the heart of our community and deprived residents, young and old, and students of a vital service.

However, Brent Council has now promised to donate the Preston Library property to the local community to operate a volunteer-run library service.

The Friends of Preston Library, who have been campaigning against the closure of our library, and Preston Community Library, which has been offering book-lending and other services in the absence of a council-funded library, are delighted to be given the opportunity to restore and enhance the facilities offered by the Preston Library project.

This is great news for the community.

Sign up to our mailing list and follow us on Twitter and on Facebook to see how you can get involved with the reopening of Preston Library.

Community Hub has Ward Working funding from the Council

The Friends of Preston Library have been awarded funding from Brent Council’s Ward Working Fund to run events at the old Preston Library Building in Carlton Avenue East [currently a temporary school].

Book-related events will be run. Depending on the age group targeted, the events will offer: * readers and/or speaker or story-teller
* children’s activities
* discussion
* access to book stock

The draft programme of events will include events for children, such as readings, story-telling and activities, talks on topics of more general interest, events of interest to older members of the community, on topics such as family history or IT access or speakers on topics of specific interest to particular local groups.

The community hub is currently operating on Monday early afternoons offering a writers group, newspapers, a scrabble group and English conversation for those for whom English is a second language.
